So, my photo "Welcoming" won the grand prize of the 2012 Fox Cities Magazine Photo Contest, and it's also on the cover of this month's issue! I'm very proud and flattered that they would choose my work.

A bit about the photo: I took it in the early February of this year, so it was about 20 something degress outside. I don't know what posessed me to go on a photo walk in downtown Appleton, but I did. I must have looked wierd to people walking by with my tripod and camera all set up on a cold night, but it was worth it. I chose to make this photo a black & white because it really eliminates all the distractions and visual clutter that a city at night can bring (and that awful orange streetlight glow!) I took a series of exposures to capture the high, low and mid tones and merged them to an HDR. This really brings out then contrast between highlights and shadows, and shows much more detail, especially in black and white. I chose a small aperture to bring much of the scene into focus and give it depth. I love the look of the 222 building in the background, giving it a "big city" feel.
