So, my photo "Welcoming" won the grand prize of the 2012 Fox Cities Magazine Photo Contest, and it's also on the cover of this month's issue! I'm very proud and flattered that they would choose my work.

A bit about the photo: I took it in the early February of this year, so it was about 20 something degress outside. I don't know what posessed me to go on a photo walk in downtown Appleton, but I did. I must have looked wierd to people walking by with my tripod and camera all set up on a cold night, but it was worth it. I chose to make this photo a black & white because it really eliminates all the distractions and visual clutter that a city at night can bring (and that awful orange streetlight glow!) I took a series of exposures to capture the high, low and mid tones and merged them to an HDR. This really brings out then contrast between highlights and shadows, and shows much more detail, especially in black and white. I chose a small aperture to bring much of the scene into focus and give it depth. I love the look of the 222 building in the background, giving it a "big city" feel.

Busy busy... https://micromacrophotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2012/8/busy-busy This summer has been pretty busy, as summers tend to be. I'm continually learning and exploring photography, and I'm loving every second of it. I've gotten to try out many different facets of photography, such as nighttime, star trails, light painting, HDR panoramas, timelapse, HDR timelapse, macro, and more! I'm looking forward to what fall will bring...

New Ideas... https://micromacrophotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2012/5/new-ideas I've recently aquired some new gear that has been spurring my creativity, and I've got several ideas for different upcoming shoots. I have an intervalometer which will allow me to do time lapse and star trails, and I have a pretty cool location or 2 in mind for that: there's a wind farm that I have photographed before near Randolph, WI, but I've never been there at night. It's completely out in the country, away from any cities or light pollution, so it should provide a great view of the stars with some interesting foreground. I just need to plan for a clear night...

I also have a neutral density filter that reduces the light coming into the camera by 1000x (ND 3.0), which will allow really long exposures, so that should help make some great light trails of traffic at night. I have a few ideas on where to shoot in the downtown area, but there's one concept I have seen done by a photographer in Singapore on 500px.com, and I think it might be interesting to try it out, but it's all about location. I'm excited to keep exploring and to try it all out...

Expose https://micromacrophotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2012/4/expose Expose

As the fall was coming to an end, I decided to go for a sunrise walk in a local park, to take in the scenery. Being November, it was about 41 degrees outside, and much of the ground was covered in frost. I had watched the sunrise and took in the landscape of fallen leaves.

This photo was actually somewhat challenging to take. First, I had to lie on the cold (and wet) leaves. Secondly, there was a bit of a cold breeze that morning, so I had to wait until the leaves were still to take the shot. To help, I actually had a small 2 inch tripod that I used to steady the camera. I used a wide aperture of f3.2 to allow a fast shutter speed and a brokeh effect with the background to keep the focus on the leaf.

I really enjoy this photo because of the way the sunlight exposes the circulatory system of the leaf, and the fractal pattern it makes. Light can sometimes open up a whole new world...

Speechless https://micromacrophotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2012/4/speechless Speechless

I was touring Chicago one weekend with a few friends of mine, just walking around the town and taking in the sights on a balmy July day. I usually keep an eye out for interesting graffitti because it can be so interesting.

While waiting to cross at a light, I noticed this scene on the lamppost. I only had about 20 seconds to get my settings right (I chose to use aperature priority mode because I didn't have time for manual), compose, and take the shot, so it was challengng and excitng to work under a little pressure. I chose use a wide aperture and focused directly on the sticker.

To me, this photo is somewhat ironic. After doing some research, the person on the sticker, Gilbere Forte, is a music artist of some reknown. It seems ironic then that his mouth is the part of the sticker that is destroyed, almost as if he is being silenced for some reason. Also interesting is the Anarchy symbol to the left under the sticker...I don't know quite what to make of that!
